I’ve had a wonderful time discovering literary journals, magazines, and anthologies from independent publishers. If, as a child, you ever looked forward to your favourite comic on a Saturday morning, you’ll know how it feels waiting for a litmag or poetry pamphlet to arrive.
The variety of editorial styles encourages writers to extend their creative territory; to experiment with style and voice. I have written nature and environmental poetry, a song in the voice of the slithy tove from Alice Through the Looking-Glass, a series of poems about the Mongolian Death Worm, and an essay comparing Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses to Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre. They have all been published, and I’m grateful to the editors.
Writers: stay weird and write from every corner of yourself.
Since becoming a publisher myself for Meet Us and Eat Us in 2024 I have a deeper respect for the brave warriors who do it year after year. Putting words on paper and into people’s hands takes a lot of energy and a huge armoury of skills. It’s worth the effort and it’s worth supporting.
